The South Korean LG wanted their smartphone branch to remain relevant and successful after producing a number of successful and innovative smartphones such as the LG Prada (with a striking design) and the LG Viewty (with a revolutionary camera).
There was a search for years for a good operating system. LG released phones with Symbian and Windows. In the end, it settled for Android. The phones released by LG always contained new components, such as a QHD screen or a curved screen. They also released a phone that allowed users to add their own camera and audio components, which caused the quality of the battery to deteriorate, while LG had previously been praised for this. LG then produced a phone with a palm scanner and an extra screen on the phone cover.
The innovative aspects of the phones did not appeal to consumers enough and LG was overtaken by Samsung and Apple. Chinese companies were also selling more devices, because they could produce devices with high-quality functions at a cheap price. Despite the fact that LG has suffered losses of 3.7 billion euros over the past five years, the company announced a new smartphone: the LG Rollable. This should compete with folding phones, but will probably not make it to market.
LG was a frontrunner in smartphones after a number of successful devices. LG kept adding innovative features, but it became difficult for LG to compete with other large companies in the changed market. It failed to appeal to the consumer.
