Offshore company Heerema offered oil companies to remove their vacant platforms from the North Sea. They planned to work with a British and a Norwegian company. Together they were called Fairfield Decom and wanted to dismantle the platforms from the British part of the North Sea. This removal is a billion dollar market, next forty years 470 more rigs need to be dismantled from the North Sea.
Director of Heerema Marine Contractors Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven says that the company was in talks for two and a half years and came up with a proposal he was confident in. Heerema could use hoisting vessels to move the platforms and the Norwegian company would dismantle the platforms on land. The British company was again very good at the final part of dismantling and sealing a platform. In this way, everything was done as efficiently and cheaply as possible. This was a big step forward compared to how it was done before. There was an enthusiastic response to the plan from various quarters. Both the oil companies and the state had to start paying for these projects.
Offshore company Heerema teamed up with a British and a Norwegian company in a joint venture to remove vacant oil platforms from the North Sea. The oil companies were initially enthusiastic about their innovative methods, but still did not prioritize the project, which would be very expensive and bring them little money.
