In 2008, I organised a festival called 'The Sea is Coming' about climate change on the Zuiderstrand. The aim was to create more awareness of the extent and consequences of climate change.
On The Hague's Zuiderstrand, from Scheveningen's Havenhoofd to Kijkduin, one could visit an art route during the festival. The artworks were created especially for the festival and were inspired by the theme of climate change. The art route was composed in such a way as to create an immense installation where human creativity respectfully interferes with nature. The organisations that shaped this festival together made a huge effort. Many (free) hours were put into the organisation and the marketing of the event.
The fact that this event is became a brilliant failure is because a number of assumptions proved to be blatantly false, namely: - The funding, despite initial successes, was ultimately insufficient for such an event. - The most important organisations that had to provide support for the event, the beach pavilions, turned out not to form a single organisational unit and all had their own opinions about the festival and its problems.
In 2008, the festival 'De Zee komt' (The sea is coming) was organised on the beach. Along a six-kilometre route, people could admire works of art that were intended to create awareness of the scope and consequences of climate change. Great efforts were made to realise the project. Unfortunately, the financing proved insufficient and the main organisations involved were not united.
