In the fifteenth century, the explorer Christopher Columbus wanted to find a new faster shipping route to the Dutch East Indies by sailing through the West. A faster route could promote trade between Europe and the East. At the time, people thought the earth was flat, but Columbus did not and he thought it was possible to sail around the world.
Columbus had difficulty finding a sponsor for his voyage, the Portuguese King Johan II turned him down the Spanish Queen Isabella of Castile willing to financially support Columbus' voyage. This provided him with good ships and crew.
Columbus did not manage to reach the Dutch East Indies, but stumbled upon an undiscovered continent: America. Thus, Columbus' journey became a success after all.
Columbus was looking for a faster sailing route to the Dutch East Indies. He planned to sail there via the West. With the financial support of the Spanish Queen Isabella, his ships left for the West, but instead of finding a new route to the Dutch East Indies there, he found the undiscovered continent of America.
