Pharmaceutical company Pfizer wanted to develop a drug for angina, chest pain and high blood pressure.
Pfizer invested six years of research (clinical trials) led by Ian Osterloh. As far as is known, no deficiencies occurred during the study.
After six years of research, the drug turned out not to work after all. Patients did report erections and renewed potency as side effects. Pfizer drastically changed its strategy and started testing the pills as a medicine for erectile dysfunction. Viagra became a huge success as an erection pill. Currently, a viagra pill is swallowed every second somewhere in the world.
While testing a drug for heart failure, it turned out that the drug did not work against it. Pfizer found out that the drug had another side effect: it produced renewed potency and erections in men. Pfizer changed its strategy and tested the pills as an erection pill, with great success, because since then they have been sold on a large scale worldwide.
