The intention of the Nursing Home Care Technological Team and the Innovation Workshop department (both associated with ZuidZorg) was to see whether the use of Company X's measuring mattresses could have an impact on the efficiency and quality of care provided to terminal patients in the last phase of life.
The smart mattress is a mattress with sensors that predicts heart failure six hours in advance. Various parameters show 'perspiration', 'temperature' and 'heart rate'. In addition, the smart mattress registers whether a client is in or out of bed and indicates whether a client is wandering. The project consisted of three rounds of experiments lasting one month. The people involved were instructed about the smart mattress. The Nursing Home Care Technological Team team had to follow the instructions and, when using data from the measurement mattress in their process, record in a log what decision they had taken based on the data. Each round ended with an evaluation.
The conclusion is that we have not yet been able to make any statements about the impact that the mattress might have. This has everything to do with the stage of product development at Company X. Until now, it has not been possible to interpret data or receive data on desired devices. All these factors are essential for testing. The 'smart' mattress turned out to be a 'stupid' mattress.
With a smart mattress that could take body measurements, the Nursing Home Technology Team wanted to improve the efficiency and quality of care for terminal patients in the last phase of life. Unfortunately, until now it was not possible to interpret data or receive data on desired devices, while it was crucial to be able to test. So it turned out not to be such a smart mattress.
