Residents of the Chinese village of Xianfeng lured monkeys to the village to attract more tourists. The idea was copied from another Chinese village, Emei Shan, where wild monkeys are a major tourist attraction.
At first, the plan also seemed to succeed in Xianfang. More tourists came because of the monkeys. In addition, they had also found an investor for this self-created nature park.
When the investor died things got out of hand. There was no money to maintain the monkeys and the group of monkeys kept expanding, which resulted in a monkey plague. This in turn kept the tourists away. The government intervened and returned half of the monkeys to the wild. Now it is waiting for the other half to leave as well.
To lure tourists, the Chinese village of Xianfeng wanted to get monkeys to the village. When the monkeys came, it all seemed to go well. However, the project got completely out of hand when the investor died. There were no more financial resources to manage the plan and maintain the monkeys.
